Niger, an old French colony and the second poorest country in the World according to UN statistics, borders on the south of the Sahara desert. Many who live there lack basic services such as education, health and clean water.
Founded in 2005, the Anoura primary school caters for underprivileged children in the village of Kwara Tegui, situated on the outskirts of the capital Niamey. As well as providing basic primary education, each child receives a daily meal, helping to reduce nutritional problems that a great number of the pupils suffer from.
The Anoura school currently teaches 70 children between the ages of five and eleven. Their desire is to expand the education given as the first wave of pupils grow and move up to higher classes. Future projects at the school depend on the building of new classrooms and obtaining the necessary government permissions. The most immediate need is the building of an exterior wall around the compound. The bricks for the wall have been made and construction will start soon, however, this will not be finished until more finance comes in, the cost probably being more than 5000 GBP. Once this is complete, three new classrooms can be built. In the meantime one temporary classroom of straw is being built for the next school year.
The school employs local teachers, although the administration of funds and the sponsorship programme is under the direct supervision of mission staff. The current cost to sponsor a child’s education is 15 GBP per child per month.
