When I first received the call into mission, over 35 years ago, it was to reach those who had never heard the Gospel. That principle still guides me today, although I am now back serving in my home country: the UK.
The Lord put the nation of Jordan on my heart, and I moved out there in 1992. As I worked alongside the church, I strived to ensure that the majority of my time and energy was spent with those who had never heard. This dictated my actions and choices.
After seven years, I met my husband and together we felt God moving us out of Jordan (The land of our vision) to the south coast of Spain, where we ministered among North Africans, again aligning ourselves with the most unreached. After 14 years in Spain, we again felt God asking us to move and sought His will as to where. For me especially, returning to the UK was out of the question and I resisted God’s gentle nudging for two years.
Eventually, ten years ago, we moved to Luton. We chose Luton as it is a multicultural town, a hive of nationalities and beliefs. Here we enjoy the freedom of sharing the Gospel openly, in the streets, as well as with friends and colleagues. The Lord has brought several waves of refugees to swell the local community. We have had the privilege of seeing Iranians – many landed at our doorstep, Arabs, and others coming to the Lord.
Looking back, I realise that reaching those who have never heard about Jesus is not simply about moving to a land where there are few believers, but choosing to leave the 99 and seek out the one. It is possible to live among unreached people but never share the message of good news. Wherever we live, the challenge is to reach the unreached, a choice we make daily as we follow His example.
